Things to Know About Depression Medications

Depression MedicationJust because you feel sad and depressed for a few days does not mean that you have depression. Depression can last for years, it’s a serious illness. Each year about 15 million Americans suffer from this illness. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. The age- old stereotype associated with mental illness influences many to still avoid admitting they suffer from depression. Depression is a progressive illness. It will get worse without treatment. It cannot be ignored.

Depression is caused by a variety of factors. These include the whole spectrum of genetic, biological, physical and emotional items. Simple daily life and surroundings are important. It can be caused by stress brought on by even more detrimental factors. Complicated diseases like depression aren’t easy to crack. The human mind is very complicated as well. The medical profession is working steadily in an attempt to study the mind and how it works. It is known that a chemical imbalance in the brain causes depression. We are learning more every day about how the whole process works. The phrase is “learning is half the battle” and with depression knowledge is power.

Depression can be treated with a host of available medications. Of course the market is full of ‘quick fix’ antidotes. Clinical tests to prove something really works in treating depression are required. At one time asylums and mental institutions were filled to the brim with mentally ill people. Fortunately that has all been changed. The anti-depressant Prozac first came into use in the USA in 1988. It has been proven effective and is still in use today although it does come with side effects.

Since that time more and more use has been made of a new class of anti-depressants. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, SSRI, are being used today. These include Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox. These work even though they too show some side effects. Herbal medications also have a place in this market.  The ingredient in St. John’s Wort extract, heperforin, is present in those that prove every bit as effective as anti-depressant drugs. When this is present in the proper quantity it is a winner. Research and information are your friends when it comes to the right medications for depression.
