One can hardly say that anxiety is a minor concern, considering that there are an estimated 40 million people in the United States alone who suffer from it, and for many of them, it can make their life almost unbearable depending on how severe their condition is. Of course, many people argue that everyone experiences some form of anxiety on occasions, but it’s only when it affects you on a daily basis that you have reason to be concerned. Of course, if it is allowed to go unchecked, the condition can soon spiral out of control. The most remarkable thing of all is that even though anxiety is so widespread, we still don’t understand it completely. Likewise, even though we know what may trigger it, we’re still unsure as to what causes it in the first place.
For lack of a better description, anxiety could perhaps be described as being fear, but without the sufferer knowing what’s causing it. For example, just prior to doing something which is potentially dangerous, one often experiences a certain amount of fear, but of course, this is perfectly natural because we know what is causing the fear in the first place. Anxiety on the other hand is when a person experiences fear for no apparent reason and this lack of a rational explanation only tends to make the condition even worse.

According to the vast majority of psychologists and psychiatrists, anxiety can often be the result of continuously seeing yourself in a negative light, and unfortunately, for many people, this is a habit they acquire without even being consciously aware of it. Even though this type of attitude may only involve relatively minor things at first, it can eventually lead to a situation where a person will always look down on themselves, and this process can take place hundreds of times within the space of a day. Once this to sort of habit has managed to take hold, the person concerned will start experiencing anxiety which can be triggered by even the most mundane things, such as having to meet new people for example.
Apart from always thinking along negative lines, anxiety sufferers also become victims of low self esteem, and of course this affects everyone differently. When these people who have a low self esteem experience something bad, they immediately try to convince themselves that they’ve deserved it. Likewise, if they fail to achieve their goals, they immediately begin thinking that it’s because they don’t deserve any better. Of course this doesn’t only apply to major things in their life, but instead, these are feelings they experience on a daily basis while going about their business. It only stands to reason than that if they spend so much time doubting themselves, their condition inevitably ends up becoming worse.
With that said; you also need to bear in mind that anxiety can be triggered if something bad happens in your life. A perfect example of this would be what we know as “post traumatic stress disorder”. However, even though this form of anxiety usually follows a traumatic experience, it can sometimes only manifest itself many years after the actual experience. For example, a person who was abused as a child maybe in some cases only begin experiencing post traumatic stress disorder later in life once they’ve grown up.
Perhaps the single most important step in helping a person to overcome anxiety is to make sure they actually understand why they’re experiencing anxiety in the first place. Unfortunately however, this is not a problem which can be eliminated overnight, but instead, it can take several months or even years, depending of course on the severity. The good news though is that anxiety can be dealt with and treated successfully, and today there’s absolutely no need whatsoever for people to continue living with what can only be described as a debilitating condition.
